Theme of the week: Money and Numbers

Arts & crafts:
Today the kids tried their hand at some coin rubbing by placing a coin under a sheet of paper and rubbing the side of a pencil lead back and forth across it. It was quite challenging for them not to press too hard, but by the end the got the hang of it!

Free play at stations:
None.

Story time:
Five Little Ducks by Raffi/Aruego/Dewey
Numbers 1,2,3,4 by CTG
Count with Dora! by Beinstein/Thompson Bros.

Cooperative game:
Mille Bornes (3rd day in a row!) This is Gabe's new favourite game and fit in nicely with our numbers theme!

Science experiment:
This week's science theme: M is for Magnets.

Testing the pull

Today the kids tested just how strong the pull of a magnet can be. First they placed a paper clip on a piece of cardboard and by using a magnet underneath they moved the paperclip around. Next using the same concept, they moved the paperclip up and down a plastic ruler. And lastly they used their magnets to perform "magic" by removing a paperclip from a glass without ever touching it!

Physical activity:
Outdoor play in the sprinkler as well as running, climbing, sliding and playing with balls in the YMCA gym with me.

Outing/social time:
1 hour at the YMCA childcare.

Worksheets:
Coloring M and N word pictures, tracing letters M and N, tracing M and N words, matching picture to beginning letter, counting and finding numeral, tracing numeral 7, matching coin to name, cutting various curved lines.

Hands on math:
Play with coins - counting, patterns, estimating who has most, estimating total, sorting by denomination, finding coins that add up to a given value.

Computers:
Money and numbers games on the iPad.
Money: Money Swipe, Money & Change Game HD Lite, Coin Loot HD, Coins Sports Free, Flickochet Lite.
Numbers: 123 Numbers, 1 to 10 Lite, Mathaliens, Kidpedia, IWW Lite, as well as the number components of ABC Letters and Alphabet Tracing.

Music:

French:
French is emphasized throughout the entire day; especially theme related words. Today we practiced answering two questions: "C'est quoi ton nom?" when someone asks them their name and "Quel age as-tu?" when someone asks how old they are. We also continued to reinforce all of the notions that we covered in previous weeks and will continue to practice these sentences all week.
