Week 9 - Monday

Arts & crafts:
The kids made guitars out of old tissue boxes, rubber bands, and cardboard and then decorated them with stickers.

Science experiment:

The themes for this week's science experiments will all begin with the letter I!

Inertia

Today the kids investigated the idea that when things are moving they keep moving until something stops them. First they rolled a small toy trailer across the floor and watched what happened to it when it hit the border between the playroom and the kitchen (it stopped). Then they added a passenger to the trailer and rolled it again, this time watching what happened to the passenger when the trailer stopped (it kept going forward). We then discussed the theory of intertia - a body in motion stays in motion unless an outside force stops it (and conversely a body at rest stays at rest unless and outside force acts upon it) and I used this idea to reinforce why it is so important to wear a seat belt in the car.

Worksheets:
Coloring I word pictures, tracing letter I, tracing I words, writing name, matching uppercase and lowercase letters E-H, counting and finding numeral, tracing the numeral 5, matching instrument name to picture, cutting curved lines of various shapes.

Hands on math:
Play with buttons - counting, easy addition & subtraction, multiplication concepts, patterns, estimating who has most, estimating total, sorting by colour, sorting by shape.

Computers:
Instruments and music games on the iPad (Music House, Virtuoso, The Woodsy Band Jam (story), Discover Musical Instruments, Guitar HD, Drums HD, Xylophone HD, Kids Box, Young Music Genius).

Music:
Danced, sang and played instruments to our Instruments & Music theme compilation cd.

French:
French is emphasized throughout the entire day; especially theme related words. Today we practiced saying "J'ai fini" when they are done doing something and also continued to reinforce all of the notions that we covered in previous weeks. We will continue to practice these sentences all week.
