Science experiment:
This week's science theme: H is for Heat.
Dissolving Sugar
The kids first hypothesized what would happen to sugar if we stirred an equal amount into a glass of cold water and a glass of hot water and why. They then put their theories to the test and watched as the sugar dissolved almost instantly in the hot water but just piled up on the bottom of the cold water glass. I then gave them a kid-friendly explanation that the reason the sugar dissolved faster in the hot water is because it has faster moving molecules which are spread further apart than the molecules in the cold water. With bigger gaps between the molecules in the hot water, more sugar molecules can fit in between!
Physical activity:
Today we went on a walk around the neighbourhood in the rain for a puddle stomp and worm hunt!
Outing/social time:
None.
Worksheets:
Coloring H word pictures, tracing letter H, tracing H words, matching written words to their pictures, drawing family members inside a house, counting and finding numeral, tracing the numeral 4, cutting zig-zag lines.
Hands on math:
Today we used number magnets to work on the notions of greater than, less than and equal to, by asking questions like find me a number that is greater than X, less than Y, or equal to Z. We made it a little more challenging by using larger numbers as well as asking for a number that is both greater than X and less than Y.
Computers:
House & Home games on the iPad (Play 2 Learn French, First Words @ Home, My Home, iCreate Home Edition, Kids and Home).
Music:
None.
French:
French is emphasized throughout the entire day; especially theme related words. Today we practiced being polite and saying "Excuse moi" after passing gas (something the kids in this house seem to do an awful lot of!) and also continued to reinforce all of the notions that we covered in previous weeks. We will continue to practice these sentences all week.
