Science experiment:

The theme this week is food. All of our experiments, although inedible, will incorporate food in some way.

Browning Apples

We cut an apple into 4 sections. One was left on the counter as is. One was placed in the fridge as is. One was painted with lemon juice and left on the counter. And the last was painted with lemon juice and placed in the fridge. The kids first formulated their hypotheses about which apple would turn brown first and why. We then set the timer for 15 minutes and came back to check on all 4 apples and see whose hypothesis was correct. Based on the results we discussed how when an apple is cut an enzyme is released that combines with the air to produce the brownish coloring. We also talked about how colder air slows the work of the enzyme and an acid bath (as from lemon juice) slows it down even further.

Physical activity:
The kids were so obsessed with the racing marbles game from the building station during free play that they refused to go outside to play!

Outing/social time:
None.

Worksheets:
Coloring E word pictures, tracing letter E, tracing E words, counting and finding numeral, differentiating above and below, matching written word to picture, writing 10, finding 10 in larger group, simple addition, cutting straight lines.

Hands on math:
Today we worked on sorting skills by sorting play food by various criteria such as food group, colour, shape, and size.

Computers:
Food games on the iPad in English and French (eFlash French, Play 2 Learn French, Food Festival, Breakfast Bash).

Music:
Danced and sang along to our eating theme compilation cd.

French:
French is emphasized throughout the entire day; especially theme related words. Today we practiced asking "Est-ce que je peux boire de l'eau s'il-vous-plait?" when they are thirsty and continued to reinforce all the notions we covered in previous weeks. We will continue to practice these sentences all week.
